Sustainability at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­

With three new grants, Professor Maria Rosa and her team are deploying 80 reef balls made of pH-balanced concrete to create a living shoreline that will help restore Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ecticut’s tidal marshes.

Founded in 2004 the Sprout Garden is a cohesive and shared community that provides social and educational spaces in which students can practice gardening and gain hands-on experience with sustainable, small-scale agriculture.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ is at the forefront of eelgrass restoration innovation, thanks to a recent grant and partnership with local environmental nonprofit Save the Sound. The eelgrass is a vital part of restoring the Thames River ecosystem, and securing seeds to live clams allows for a sturdy surface for the plant to grow underwater.

More than 130 sleek black solar panels now adorn the roof of the Service Building, creating an on-site, renewable electricity system. The project harnessed the passion and expertise of students, alumni and faculty who are committed to supporting the College’s sustainability plan.

Sprout Garden aims to actualize the College’s commitment to sustainability by minimizing the College’s food-footprint and increasing New London’s local food resilience

Used as teaching and research facility for the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ botany and ecology classes, the greenhouse collection is comprised of approximately 433 individual plants, representing 328 unique taxa, 83 families and over 70 countries.
